I’m now a couple of months into my Blog Forward Challenge with Zone Perfect – a conscious decision to improve my health and overall fitness level. Just a mere couple of months and now I know why New Year’s Resolutions suck! This is straight up hard work. I’ve earned brownie points for many salad based lunches this month, but I haven’t been able to kick my sugar addiction though my Zone Perfect chocolate peanut butter protein bars have saved me from major diet damage.
Time remains my number one enemy…it’s always working against me. Apparently my regular night-owl bedtime is causing way more harm than I ever imagined! According to nutrition expert Pamela Nisevich Bede, my chronic lack of sleep is fueling my sweet tooth and could be responsible for irritability. Ouch. Pamela is a registered dietitian and a board-certified specialist in sports dietetics as well as senior scientist of performance nutrition at Abbott Nutrition. I got a chance to speak with her this week about strategies to help me stay on track this year.
-Get to know what a real portion size is using a measuring cup.
-Use ramekins as a guide for the perfect portion size for treats.
-When you get really ravenous check your thirst first…make sure you’re drinking enough water everyday.
-Tell yourself, “If I’m really hungry the baby carrots will work. (my new mantra)
-Sweets are OK, but make them infrequent and be conscious of portion control.
I love starting my day with a power packed fruit smoothie, but it doesn’t take long before I’m hungry so Pamela suggested adding some protein powder to keep feeling satisfied longer. When I mentioned how hard I’ve found it to fit in my workouts everyday Pamela had the perfect words of wisdom, “the thing about exercise is making an appointment with yourself and making the time in your life to keep that appointment.”
I’m more determined than ever to make time everyday for ME!
I plan to recharge by getting a good night’s sleep…no more staying up past midnight. And Zone Perfect has sent me a pocket sized portable charger so my “energy” is never drained. I’m delighted to announce I plan to share to love to a lucky reader. Just leave me a comment about how you’re staying on track with your 2014 health and fitness goals and you could win your own Zone Perfect portable charger for iPhone or Android devices.
Thanks for coming along on this journey, and I look forward to hearing how you’re doing!
